I was an elite
I graduated from a graduate school in Japan in 2023. I became a researcher for a local government. Objectively, I was an elite. (Subjectively, I don’t think so.)
The job was stable. I was less likely to resign until I retired, and my wage was supposed to increase little by little. The job was a status. I was a researcher working for a government. Citizens could respect us and call us teachers.
6 months after I started working as a researcher, I resigned. My job is said to be a good job. So, the first time I told my coworkers I wanted to resign, nobody believed what I had said. Above all, they didn’t believe me till I left the workplace at all.
Influence of YouTube videos
A lot of Japanese YouTubers encourage people to go abroad to work. Most of the people in Japan are Japanese. We rarely speak languages other than Japanese. We learn English at school a lot. We mainly learn vocabulary and grammar. We learn listening a little bit, but, the English we listen to are really clear and slow.
That’s why Working abroad is struggling. And, there is another reason. I’ll show it to you later.
The YouTubers emphasized how challenging, interesting, and exciting working abroad is.
I thought it exciting to work in a completely unfamiliar environment with unknown people in English. When I can overcome obstacles, I’m satisfied. I wanted to face the greatest obstacles ever in my life.
Working holiday for Japanese
The easiest way to work abroad for Japanese is to be a working holidaymaker. You can work in each country for at least 1 year. You just need to be under 30 years old.
Why I chose NZ
We hardly learn languages except for English. And, as I mentioned above, I learned English a lot. Going to English-speaking countries is easy to come up with. With working holiday visas, we can go to Australia, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and NZ as English-speaking countries.
I went to Australia on a working holiday in 2018. We can’t get a working holiday visa from the same country again. I used to hear that there are a lot of foreign people in NZ. I was not confident about my English. So, I thought NZ was the easiest to work in.
Downsides for Japanese of working holiday
A Japanese resigning from a job for a working holiday makes their life hard. If they are engaged in a job they need a qualification like nursing, you can easily get the same job after they come back from the holiday.
Companies, especially big ones think a working holiday is not a good experience but just a holiday. Working holidaymakers can’t get a good job in Japan. I heard European societies think of traveling as a good experience.
Furthermore, I graduated from college and started working. After 6 months, I resigned. It means I don’t have good working experience. And, the companies consider me as a kind of person who can’t work long for them. The companies want employees to work for them till they retire.
