I went on a working holiday to New Zealand and got a job at a restaurant. I started working and it was exciting. I’m writing about it. You can check out the previous story here.
I was really excited after I got a job. I heard it was hard for a poor English speaker like me to get a job, but I was accepted at the first job interview I had(I wrote about the job interview here). I was dancing in my mind.
On the first day of working, I was still excited, but very nervous as well. I was a socially awkward person, so I’d been nervous when I started a new job. Furthermore, it was the first time I had worked in only English. I wanted to work long there because I didn’t want to do a stressful job search again. I didn’t want to make any mistakes that possibly made my manager disappointed.
I got to work with the manager and a student. He told me the basics about working at the restaurant. I was very careful in listening to him. I needed to take orders from customers in person and after that cook. I was confident about my English, but I was not sure if I could hold conversations with customers and I was also afraid of making other coworkers annoyed because of my English. Again, I was really nervous.
I was hoping to work at a restaurant other than a Japanese restaurant. It was usual for Japanese to work at a Japanese restaurant because we are poor at English conversations. I finally started working full-time with people not speaking Japanese. I was ultimately proud of that and that made me excited.
The restaurant was busy because of a limited number of people, only two were working. During lunch time, we got customers continuously. When I’m not busy, I can get bored and can’t enjoy it, so this restaurant was really for me.
Of course, my poor English got me in trouble. But, the excitement masked it and I enjoyed working so much.
